Story

Witches Gone Wilde — the theme of Asheville's 19th Annual Free Public Witch Ritual conducted by Coven Oldenwilde on Thursday, October 31st, 2013 C.E. — was beautiful and powerful!

Despite a rain wash-out direly predicted for days in advance of the festivities by area meteorologists, our months of chanting hundreds of times daily an effective weather-working charm we devised decades ago paid off in predictable fashion: Volunteer helpers were grateful for the preternaturally warm temp during setup, and the barest mist glistened faces of ritual participants grateful for the cool-down after the fast-paced Spiral Dance finale!

Volunteers of all kinds impressively decorated the forested, 4-acre site alongside the French Broad River in assured, unrushed fashion. Helpers included experienced, seasoned veterans of our annual exploits; a homeless couple; a former young male apprentice turned activist college student; a Native American medicine man; and many more.

Witches Gone Wilde: Samhain 2013

Lady Passion gave hundreds of fortune-telling readings to attendees depending on method each preferred, either cards, coins, or cowry shells.

Three playing-card Aces tossed air-ward sought the querents' Ancestors' otherworldly wisdom regarding their earthly plans, revealed in the card that landed closest to her, while three gold Sacajawea dollars or quarter-sized cowry seashells shaken and tossed across the altar answered burning "Yes/No" or "Past/Present/Future" queries.

Kids played all manner of traditional Witch games for prizes in the spookily decorated Kidz Zone. Teens and adults either mingled with Witches who'd traveled from afar, or donated to support our nonprofit by purchasing a hardcover or paperback occult book or dried Fava Bean divination kit in organza, clear-pak, or satin pouches handmade by Lady Passion.

Circle began with the traditional ice-breaking Meeting Dance, then transitioned into a solemn lament for the Dead, and culminated with a breath-taking 8-minute Spiral Dance to the gypsyesque Kila tune "Rusty Nails."

The Afterparty for volunteers featured food, drink, camaraderie, and a thought-provoking Witch game in which deep philosophical questions were posed and everyone in turn expressed their feelings or opinions about them. Folks stayed till 5 a.m., and our lack of clear picture proof of the fun had reflects the truism that those who attended likely came away with a rather blurry recollection of events!

Afterclap: Lady Passion had torn her left leg quadriceps muscle weeks prior to the rite, but was healed by the power raised during circle.

Spirit Flame Lanterns for Samhain 2013 Witches Gone Wilde

Spirit Flame Lanterns

Lady Passion made dozens of hanging lanterns for this year's Sabbat.

How-to Recipe

Ingredients:
  • Recycled clear glass jars
  • Color-coordinated art supplies such as blue & silver Sharpies, silver wire, and navy-colored yarn; red & black Sharpies, copper wire, and rust-colored yarn; or orange & green Sharpies, gold wire, and carrot-colored yarn
  • Pliers, clamps, or hemostats
  • Scissors

Draw Witchy design on outer surface of each jar using markers. Air dry.

Wrap craft wire 1 1/2 or more times around the outside bottom circumference of each jar's recessed or screw-cast upper lip, tightening in the process by twisting a 1/8th-to-1/4th-inch loop on opposite sides.

Tie one yarn end onto the top of one loop, allowing some end excess to trail down below it; attach other yarn end to opposite loop and repeat excess. Unravel side dangles.

Lay a battery-operated tea light with blue flame (you can find these on eBay) on the inside bottom of each jar, and hang lanterns from tree limbs encircling your ritual site.

When lit, the lanterns' thinly inked patterns resemble enchanting stained glass!

Portable divination altar by Owl

Portable Divination Altar

Former apprentice Owl made this altar for Lady Passion some years ago. Oval wood base with round pentagram topper. Tea-light/censer holders drilled into each side. Wood stained, then black gradient painted. Original color pentagram printout and all wood then lacquered for durability. Round topper swivels to display pentagram toward reader or querent as desired, and removes from base with ease for portability.

How to foretell the future using 3 playing cards, coins, cowry shells, or nut-shell halves is fully explained in The Goodly Spellbook: Olde Spells for Modern Problems, Lady Passion & *Diuvei, Sterling Publishing, NY/NY, 2005.

Fortune-tellers' Realm

A long fuzzy-thick black lay cloth invites querents to connect with the earth by sitting atop it on the ground during their reading. Inserted altar pentagram provides querents desired mystery or privacy, or if removed, a teaching moment for onlookers awaiting their turn. Hanging blue tea-light glowing lanterns, blue glow-sticks, and Mardi Gras necklaces bedeck the background tree tableau.

Ol' Charmer

A young Goth guy simply walking in the park was intrigued by our antics, and not only helped decorate the site, but volunteered to animate our traditional European Mast Beast, the Spirit Horse Ol' Charmer! (He's hidden at left beneath the skull and dun drape, beside *Diuvei at right.)
